Program Summary
Working with the Westchester-Putnam Counties Consortium for Worker Education and Training, NADAP prepares future workers for employment in the construction and building trades industry by providing career awareness activities and pre-apprenticeship training in the basic skills needed to enter rigorous apprenticeship programs and employment. Through a combination of classroom and hands on training, held at either a local college or at Union apprenticeship training centers, the participant gains the knowledge and experience needed to enter and succeed in a certified apprenticeship program. Participants that successfully complete the pre-apprenticeship training program have greater opportunities to become eligible for acceptance into a Construction Union Apprenticeship programs.
The program also provides upgrading skills classes to journeyworks ensuring their employability as new technologies emerge within the industry. The curriculum is developed in conjunction with the Apprenticeship Training Manager of the participating union. Classroom training takes place at the union’s apprenticeship training centers. The program is designed to meet the requirements of unions and employers, while at the same time providing training for workers who are faced with certain barriers to employment.
Since 2000, hundreds of high school students learn about the exciting careers available within the building and construction trades by attending our annual Construction Career Day event. Experienced journey workers have presented information to over 1,500 students from Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Dutchess, Orange, Ulster, Green, and Sullivan Counties.
Program Features
- Delivers customized classroom training at either a local college or at the union apprenticeship training center
- Provides on the job training after one week of class room training
- Prepares individuals to succeed in a State Certified Apprenticeship Program
- Provides students with information about the building and construction trades apprenticeship programs
- Engages students with hands-on activities led by experienced trade professionals
- Provides high school students with a better understanding of the careers available within the construction industry
- Exposes students to the tools of the construction industry by providing hands on demonstrations
- Coordinates more than 20 exhibitors representing local trade unions participating each year
